Sometimes it’s hard to understand native speakers talking at top speed because the words seem to flow like a river and you can’t distinguish the individual words. And maybe they don’t understand you either, even though your grammar and vocabulary may be correct, and you may have managed to incorporate some great expressions, because your own pronunciation confuses or distracts them.

Our courses in «Mejora tu pronunciación» will help tune your ear to Spanish and make your own speech easier to understand. It’s unlikely that you will end up with a native-speaker accent, but you can sound more natural and less hesitant, feel more confident, speak more fluently and, above all, be understood.

In this course you can improve your ability to perceive and produce the following sounds:

• La erre vibrante simple (the sound of “r” in pero)
• La erre vibrante múltiple (the sound of “r” in perro)
• La de oclusiva y aproximante (the sounds of “d” in día and cada día: yes, they’re different!)
• La be y la uve oclusivas y aproximantes (the sounds of “b” and “v” in Valencia and a Valencia)
• La ge oclusiva y aproximante (the sounds of “g” in guante and aguante)

Each lesson deals with a different problem and consists of two parts:

• A video-lesson consisting of an explanation and demonstration by the virtual teacher, contrasting Spanish and English pronunciation.
• An interactive session where you can practise the pronunciation of words and phrases and compare your pronunciation with that of a native speaker.

The key to improving your pronunciation is repetition, repetition and more repetition, watching the video-lesson several times and listening very carefully. For this reason we recommend the use of good-quality headphones and microphone. Then we recommend that you repeat the interactive session over a period of several days until your pronunciation sounds closer to that of the native teacher. Then you can ask Spanish-speaking friends, a Spanish teacher or your language exchange partner to listen to you repeating words and phrases from the lesson and give you feedback.

The pronunciation you hear in «Mejora tu Pronunciación» is standard Spanish from Spain, which is understood throughout the Hispanic world. That’s why you will hear the «z» in Zaragoza and the «c» in cero pronounced like the “th” in “thin”. However, even in Spain this sound is pronounced differently in various regions of the country. But it doesn’t matter if you pronounce this sound like “th” in “thin” or the “s” in “sin”; people will understand you anyway because they are used to this variation.

A veces es difícil entender lo que dicen los nativos hablando a toda máquina (at top speed) porque las palabras parecen fluir como un río rápido y no se pueden distinguir las palabras individuales. Y puede que los nativos tampoco te entiendan a ti, aunque la gramática y el vocabulario sean correctos, e incluso hayas conseguido incorporar algunas expresiones fantásticas, porque tu propia pronunciación les distrae o confunde.

Nuestros cursos de «Mejora tu pronunciación» te ayudarán a refinar tu oído al español y hacer más comprensible tu propia habla. Es poco probable que acabes con un acento nativo, pero sí puedes sonar más natural y menos vacilante, tener más confianza en ti mismo, hablar con más fluidez y, sobre todo, ser entendido/a.

En este curso puedes mejorar tu pronunciación y tu percepción de los siguientes sonidos:

• La erre vibrante simple (la erre de «pero»)
• La erre vibrante múltiple (la erre de «perro»)
• La de oclusiva y aproximante («d» de «día» y «cada día»: ¡Sí, son diferentes!)
• La be y la uve oclusivas y aproximantes (la «v» de «Valencia» y «a Valencia», y la «b» de «Barcelona» y «a Barcelona»)
• La ge oclusiva y aproximante (la «g» de «guante» and «aguante»)

Cada lección trata de un problema diferente y consta de dos partes:

• Una vídeo-lección que consta de una explicación y demostración por un/a profesor/a virtual, haciendo contrastes entre la pronunciación del español y la del inglés.
  
• Una sesión interactiva en la que puedes practicar pronunciando palabras y frases, y comparar tu pronunciación con la de un/a nativo/a.

La clave para mejorar la pronunciación es repetición, repetición, y más repetición, viendo la vídeo-lección varias veces, escuchando muy detenidamente. Por eso recomendamos que utilices micrófono y auriculares de buena calidad. Luego recomendamos que repitas la sesión interactiva durante un período de algunos días hasta que tu pronunciación sea más parecida a la de un/a nativo/a. Entonces puedes pedir a conocidos hispanohablantes, un/a profesor/a de español o tu pareja de intercambio lingüístico que te escuchen repitiendo palabras y frases de la lección y te den feedback.

La pronunciación que escuchas en «Mejora tu pronunciación» es del castellano estándar de España, que se entiende por todo el mundo hispánico. Por eso oirás que la «z» de Zaragoza y la «c» de cero se pronuncian como el sonido de “th” en thin. Pero incluso en España este sonido se pronuncia de distintas maneras según la región del país. Sin embargo, poco importa si pronuncias este sonido como la ”th” en thin o la “s” en sin; la gente te va a entender de todos modos, está acostumbrada a esta variación.

Cada lección dura 1-2 horas o más, dependiendo de cuánto te aplicas en el estudio: por ejemplo, recomendamos que vuelvas a repetir el componente interactivo varias veces a lo largo de una semana.
